The descision on whether you reside in Switzerland or France will depend on the type of work permit the Swiss authorities will deliver you :

The B permit and the C permit imply that you are a resident, give you the right to reside in the canton of your choice.

The G " frontalier " permit obliges you to live in neighbouring France.

Don't let distances frighten you: in the Geneva Canton nothing is far. Whether you live Collonge-Bellerive, Bernex ou Versoix, it will take you about 10 minutes to drive downtown Geneva. The greatest difficulty is the crossing of the bridge at "Quai du Mont Blanc" which is terribly crowded at peak hours. We advise you to live and work on the same side of the lake. If your children do not go to the neighbourhood school it could take you up to 10 minutes or more to take them to school.

City or country living ?

If you like living in the city choose to live in Geneva but be aware that it will be extremely difficult to find a house. If you find an apartment be sure it has a parking place or a garage.

If you prefer country living you may go to one of the suburban areas (see map), but be careful, in some of the villages or small towns like Collex-Bossy, Genthod, Bellevue or Versoix you may be disturbed by airplanes landing and taking off.

Note: Public transport to and from the countryside is not very frequent, inform yourself about transportation to and from the area that interests you.

In between city and country living: Cologny, Chênes-Bougeries, Chêne.Bourg, Thônex, Veyrier, Carouge, Lancy, Onex, Vernier, Meyrin, Grand-Saconnex, Pregny-Chambésy (see map) offer a good compromise. There are few private houses but you can find many nice apartments surrounded by gardens and with good public transport.

A few points concerning the description of housing :

In the Geneva Canton, the kitchen counts as one room.
The so-called "carnozet" is a small room where you can eat Fondue without smelling up the rest of the house. It's normally situated in the downstairs part of the house.

The "Attic" is the top floor of a building; it often offers a nice terrace.

An apartment with mention "traversant" will have windows on both sides of the building

If you encounter mentions such as HLM, HCM or others, those are social housing, obtain information by calling " The Office de Logement Social ".

"Loyers libres" means that the landlord will decide himself on the cost of the rent. (and not the "Régie - Real Estate Office)

When buying a hous or a villa , check before that the swimming pool is already mentionned in the land register cadastre , otherwise it will be your responsability to have it registered by an official surveyor . To get more information on these subjects :
