Compulsory medical insurance ( LAMal)

Anyone living in Switzerland must be insured against expenses arising from illness or accident. This is called: Assurance de base. You must subscribe to this type of insurance at the latest three months after your arrival in Switzerland; if you have a child while living in this country you have only three months to make sure the child is covered by the same type of insurance. Every member of the family must have his own coverage.

This insurance allows you to be reimbursed for a certain portion of your medical expenses. Your are free to choose your insurance company, or your "Caisse", as they call it but be careful: franchises vary a lot from one caisse to another.

Complementary Insurance

The official text points out that <<you can subscribe to complementary insurance to pay for therapy that is not covered by you basic insurance. However it is not mandatory. Insurance companies are free to determine -the extent of their benefits and the amount of the premium. They can also enter reservations in respect of the insurance police or even refuse a candidate. >>

Be sure to ask if you will be covered for pregnancies, accidents or invalidity and if you will continue to be covered upon retirement.

Every person holding a valid resident permit in Switzerland is obliged to insure him or her-self against the consequences of ill-health.
The offers in this field are extremely diversified and as there are more than one hundred insurers on the market, it is important to be well advised.
Beyond the basic cover, which is identical for everyone, you need to decide on the amount of the yearly franchise, the degree of hospital comfort (communal or single bedroom, clinic), eventual complementary insurances (dental care, alternative medicine, etc…).
